چکیده

This paper presents a case study of a hardware-software codesign of the RSA cipher embedded in reconfigurable hardware. The 16 and 32-bit soft cores of Altera’s Nios RISC processor are used as the basic building block of the proposed complete embedded solutions. The effect of moving computationally intensive parts of RSA into an optimized parameterized scalable Montgomery coprocessor(s) is analyzed and compared with a pure software (but still embedded) solution. Advantages of the scalable solution are presented and discussed. The impact of the tasks distribution between the hardware and the software on the occupation of logic resources as well as the speed of the algorithm is demonstrated and generalized. The study demonstrates a number of guidelines generally applicable for similar designs.

The Assert Set of Tools for Engineering (taste): Demonstrator, Hw/sw Codesign, and Future

This paper reports the results of a project funded by ESA on the use and development of TASTE (The ASSERT Set of Tools for Engineering). TASTE is a set of tools which, ruled by a clear methodology, aims to ease and secure the building of Real-Time Embedded (RTE) systems. The first goal of this project was to evaluate TASTE with an industrial case study, the realization of a satellite demonstrat...

A Case Study in Hardware-Software Codesign of Distributed Systems - Vehicle Parking Management System

Hardware-software codesign of distributed systems is a more challenging task than that of centralized embedded systems. Each phase of codesign, such as copartitioning, cosynthesis, cosimulation, and coverification, must take into account physical restrictions imposed by the distributed nature of such systems. Although codesign of distributed systems is more complex, yet many common parts of the...

DESC: A Hardware-Software Codesign Methodology for Distributed Embedded Systems

The hardware-software codesign of distributed embedded systems is a more challenging task, because each phase of codesign, such as copartitioning, cosynthesis, cosimulation, and coverification must consider the physical restrictions imposed by the distributed characteristics of such systems. Distributed systems often contain several similar parts for which design reuse techniques can be applied...

Hardware/Software Co-design is a starting point in Embedded Systems Architecture Education

Embedded Systems Architectures are hard to design, and there is no generally accepted method of doing it. In recent years, this problem has become even harder because of the wide variety of programmable components (FPGA, ASIP, DSP, ...). We propose hardware/software codesign as a starting point for teaching the topic. Codesign helps designer-students to think about architecture design in terms ...
